3 Mindset Myths Holding You Back
When I first started working in professional sport, I quickly realised how much mindset shapes performance — not just talent or effort. But I also saw a lot of misconceptions that hold people back from reaching their potential. I also realised that it was something I could learn from and utilise in my work and personal life.
Here are three of the most common mindset myths I’ve encountered — and why breaking free from them can unlock your growth.
Myth 1: You Have to Be Naturally Confident
One of the biggest myths is that confidence is something you either have or you don’t. Watching elite athletes and high performers, I saw something different: confidence is built — slowly and deliberately. It’s the result of consistent action, learning, and small wins.
You don’t need to feel 100% confident before starting. Instead, confidence grows when you take action despite fear or doubt. Celebrate your progress and know that every step forward is a confidence builder.
Myth 2: Motivation is Constant
Motivation is often seen as a steady flame that fuels success. The reality is, motivation ebbs and flows for everyone — even the pros. What separates high performers is their ability to act when motivation is low.
Developing discipline and daily habits means you keep moving forward, regardless of how you feel. This is why mindset work focuses so much on building routines and small wins that keep you on track even on tough days.
Myth 3: Failure Means You’re Not Good Enough
Failure can feel crushing — but in sport, it’s reframed as feedback, not a verdict. I saw athletes analyse their failures to find lessons and come back stronger.
Embracing failure as part of the growth process helps you move beyond fear and perfectionism. It allows you to take risks, learn, and develop resilience.
Breaking these myths free you from limiting beliefs and open the door to real progress.
