Welcome!
“You owe it to yourself to be the best you can possibly be - in baseball and in life.”
There are many books and features written by or about high performance athletes, but little is known about the ‘behind the scenes’ in professional sport. There are lots of people who make up the wider team in professional sport, off the pitch, not just those who run out on match day, or compete at the games, but who work towards the common goal of success often unseen and unrecognised.
They are the little-known secret behind every professional sporting team or athlete who put in the grind day after day and hour after hour. Most of the time, you never hear about them, could walk past them in the street and have no idea who they were or what they had been doing that day, but they are absolutely integral to that’s team success.
And what is so interesting about the role of the ‘behind the scener’, is that they have access to a world that thrives on and is centred around success, tapping into a culture that is unparalleled in any other sector. Whether that is winning trophies, having the best players on the best teams, it all comes down to a formula for success.
I was one of those people. I have spent 20 years in sport, working away behind the scenes and I can tell you that everything I learnt working behind the scenes in sport has taught me everything I have needed to know to create success in my life. And I’m not just talking about earning money here, I’m talking about relationships, parenting, working on my own businesses, even planning our wedding. It’s all been influenced and organised by working in professional sport.
I often get told that I am very organised, or that I always am ahead of the game in terms of planning or booking things and, to be honest, I will take that, I am. But I wasn’t always like that. Oftentimes, I would dilly-dally around so that I never really got anything done. I was the master procrastinator and, looking back, it probably held me back from achieving more at an earlier stage. I would listen to noise and ‘you can’t do this’ or ‘no one gets those jobs’ and all that piffle that it actually impacted upon what I achieved and when.
However, moving into sport was revelatory for my life. Sure, it was relentless or unrelenting, actually both, but it taught me so much that I have carried through with me into our home life, my relationships and even into a midlife career pivot.
When people ask me ‘how do you do it?’ or ‘how do you get all of this done?’ I always tell them that sport trained me for it. But I’m not an athlete and I was never a professional sportsperson, but I did work in top flight professional sport and that tattoo never washes off.
So here is everything I have learnt, wrapped up in what I hope are some humorous (and maybe a little inspirational) stories, that help you boss your life.
I hope you enjoy these blogs pieces. Some will include lots of stories from my time in sports and others will be direct advice - from my experiences - that I hope you will apply to your own life.
You don’t need validation to live well, with confidence and self-belief. You don’t need hundreds of qualifications to prove that you are worthy and capable of success.
If I can do just one thing today - it is to inspire you to take control of your life and to tell yourself (with conviction) that you are capable of achieving whatever it is that you have your heart set on!
